I grew up on a family farm near Highland, IL, which featured several ponds where I spent my summers catching fish and chasing frogs. Throughout the years, I observed how these ponds experienced fluctuations in fish populations, aquatic vegetation, and sometimes faced fish kills. At the time, I didn't fully understand the causes or realize the potential for intervention. My passion for these ponds led me to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Eastern Illinois University, where I took every fisheries course available. During college, I worked for 3.5 years at the Illinois Natural History Survey fisheries research lab. As a creel clerk at Ridge Lake in Charleston, IL, I transitioned to a fisheries technician role, spending significant time at the Kaskaskia and Sam Par biological stations. My work included electrofishing, seining, and taking water and sediment samples. This experience allowed me to measure thousands of fish and understand the habitat preferences that influenced successful fisheries. After completing my degree, I collaborated with a local agricultural supplier specializing in aquatic chemicals. I was tasked with customized aquatic applications for five years. Eventually, I founded my own company, which offers fisheries management services, fountain and aeration sales, and water quality testing.
